The word ‘canoeist’ always looks a bit wrong to me. It’s that e just sitting there right in the middle, in flagrant disregard for the convention of removing the trailing e from words when you add a suffix to them.

Just look at it. It couldn’t be prouder. Ha ha, its saying, you can’t get rid of me, because the word canoeist looks even more stupid without the e.

Stupid e.

And while I’m at it, the word canoe looks pretty funny too. Why isn’t it spelt ‘canoo’?
